Main Clinic Supply's flagship portable oxygen concentrator. 4.37 lbs, 7 pulse settings, 2.8-inch full-color LCD, up to 1,400 ml/min, 5-year device warranty with 2-year user-replaceable sieve bed warranty. $2,295.

Fast Facts: Reading a POC Display

  • Every medical-grade POC display shows four items: pulse setting, battery state, breath detection, and active alarms.
  • The pulse setting (P5 or just 5) is the device's current delivery setting; it should match your prescription.
  • Battery icons typically turn yellow at 25% and red at 10% or below.
  • Yellow alarms are cautionary; red alarms require immediate action.
  • Common yellow alarms: low battery, filter check, temperature out of range.
  • Common red alarms: no breath detected, oxygen output failure, critical low battery.
  • The Vita-Ox HD7 uses plain-language English alerts paired with color status indicators.

What four things every POC display shows

Every medical-grade portable oxygen concentrator display shows the same four pieces of information, even if the layout varies between manufacturers.

Current pulse setting

The number you are currently set to deliver. This should match what your physician prescribed. On the Vita-Ox HD7, the setting is shown as a large numeral in the center of the home screen.

Battery state

Either a percentage (74%, for example) or a battery icon with bar segments, plus an estimated time remaining at the current setting. The time remaining shrinks as the battery drains and as you go to higher settings.

Breath detection

A small icon or indicator that flashes each time the device detects an inhale and delivers an oxygen pulse. If this indicator is not flashing while you are breathing, check the cannula.

Active alarms

Any current alarm message, with the corresponding color. Yellow for caution. Red for active alarm requiring immediate action.

What the battery icons mean

Green or full — more than 25% remaining

Device is operating normally on battery power. The displayed time remaining is at the current setting; it shortens at higher settings.

Yellow or partial — 10% to 25% remaining

Plan to plug in or switch to a spare battery in the next 30 to 60 minutes depending on the setting. This is a cautionary warning, not an emergency.

Red or critical — 10% or below

Plug in immediately or switch to a charged spare. The device may sound an audible alarm. Do not continue use at red without taking action.

What setting "P5" means

P5 (or sometimes just 5) on the display means the device is currently delivering pulse dose setting 5. Your prescription specifies a setting; the display shows what the device is currently set to.

If the displayed setting does not match your prescribed setting, adjust it using the up and down setting buttons on the device. On the Vita-Ox HD7, the setting buttons are on the front face below the display. Press once to change by one setting.

Do not adjust your setting without consulting your physician The prescription is set based on clinical testing. Changing settings yourself can result in too much oxygen (wasteful, reduces battery life) or too little oxygen (results in desaturation).

What alarm codes you may see

Yellow cautions

Low Battery, Charge Now

Battery below 25%. Plan to plug in soon.

Check Filter

The particulate intake filter needs to be inspected or replaced. Filter replacement is user-doable in minutes.

Move to Warmer Place / Move to Cooler Place

Ambient temperature is outside the device's normal operating range. Move to a more moderate location.

Service Soon

A scheduled maintenance reminder. Contact Main Clinic Supply at 1-800-775-0942 to coordinate service.

Red alarms

Absence of Breath, Check Cannula

The device has not detected breaths for the alarm interval. Verify the cannula is connected to the device and positioned in your nostrils.

Low Oxygen, Service Required

Oxygen output has dropped below medical-grade concentration. Stop use and contact service.

Critical Low Battery

Battery below 10%. Plug in immediately or switch to a charged spare.

System Fault

An internal error has been detected. Power cycle the device. If the alarm persists, contact service.

What to do when you see a yellow or red icon

Yellow cautions: Address the underlying condition (charge the battery, check the filter, adjust ambient temperature) within the next 30 to 60 minutes. Yellow cautions do not require stopping use.
Red alarms: take immediate action The specific action depends on the alarm. For absence of breath, check the cannula. For low oxygen or system fault, switch to a backup oxygen source if you have one and call Main Clinic Supply at 1-800-775-0942. For critical low battery, plug in or switch to a charged spare.
Never silence a red alarm and continue use without resolving the underlying issue Red alarms indicate the device is no longer delivering oxygen as prescribed. Silencing the audible alarm without addressing the cause results in unmonitored desaturation. If you cannot resolve the alarm, switch to a backup oxygen source and contact service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What information does every POC display show?

Four things: the current pulse setting, the battery state (percentage and time remaining), breath detection (a visual confirmation each time the device delivers a pulse), and any active alarm or status message. The specific layout varies by manufacturer, but every medical-grade POC shows these four items.

What does "P5" or "5" on the screen mean?

The number is your current pulse setting. P5 (or just 5) means the device is delivering setting 5. Your prescribed setting comes from your physician. If the displayed setting is different from your prescribed setting, adjust it using the setting buttons before continuing use.

What do the battery icons mean?

A full bar (or 100%) means full charge. As the battery drains, the bar shortens and the percentage decreases. At 25% remaining, most POCs turn the battery icon yellow as a low-battery warning. At 10% or below, the icon turns red and the device may sound an audible alarm.

What is the difference between a yellow alarm and a red alarm?

Yellow alarms are cautionary; they indicate a condition that needs attention but does not require immediate action. Examples: low battery (charge soon), filter check due, ambient temperature outside normal range. Red alarms require immediate action. Examples: no breath detected, oxygen output below specification, critical low battery.

What should I do when I see a red alarm?

Three steps. First, check the cannula to make sure it is connected to the device and properly positioned in your nostrils. Second, if the cannula is fine, check the air intake filter for blockage. Third, if neither resolves the alarm, switch to a backup oxygen source if you have one and call Main Clinic Supply at 1-800-775-0942. Do not attempt to silence a red alarm and continue use without resolving the underlying issue.

Does the Vita-Ox HD7 use plain-language alerts or just icons?

Plain-language English alerts. The Vita-Ox HD7 displays messages like "Absence of Breath, Check Cannula," "Low Battery, Charge Now," or "Move to Warmer Place" in addition to color-coded status indicators. This is the design pattern most useful for senior users who do not want to memorize icon meanings.
