Talk to your doctor first. A short conversation covers three things: whether you are fit to fly, what oxygen setting you need at cruising altitude, and whether your destination changes anything. Airplane cabins are pressurized to roughly the same air as a mountain town, so many doctors prescribe a higher setting in the air than on the ground. High-altitude destinations like Denver or Santa Fe may call for an adjustment too.
Get your paperwork together. Ask your doctor for:
A note on prescriptions. If you are new to oxygen or switching equipment, remember that the FDA requires a prescription for any oxygen concentrator. It sounds like a hassle. It is not. Book with your oxygen in mind. Nonstop flights mean less battery math and less hauling through terminals. If you connect, longer layovers give you time to recharge. And aisle seats make it easier to move, though you cannot sit in an exit row while using a POC.
Pulse dose vs. continuous flow, in plain words. A pulse-dose unit delivers a puff of oxygen each time you inhale. A continuous-flow unit delivers a steady stream whether you are inhaling or not. Most lightweight travel POCs are pulse-dose. If your prescription calls for continuous flow, especially overnight or at higher liter flows, a pulse-only unit is not a substitute. The honest truth about battery numbers. Manufacturer brochures quote battery life at the lowest setting, sitting still, with a new battery. Real life involves your actual setting, walking through airports, and batteries that have aged. A unit rated "up to 13 hours" might realistically give you far less at setting 3 or 4. Do a home test run. A week before your trip, run your POC on battery only, at your travel setting, and time it. Practice swapping the battery and the cannula until it feels routine. Check that your device shows its FAA compliance label (red lettering on the unit). You want zero surprises at the gate.
This is the chapter people worry about most, and the one where the rules actually protect you.
Your rights. Under federal air-travel rules, U.S. airlines must allow you to use a POC that meets FAA acceptance criteria, provided you give notice and carry enough battery. Your POC and its batteries do not count as carry-on luggage, and airlines cannot charge you a fee for them. If you are ever refused at the gate despite meeting the requirements, ask calmly for the airline's Complaint Resolution Official. Every carrier has one on duty.
Step 1: Confirm your device qualifies. Look for the red-lettered FAA label on your unit. Every portable concentrator we sell meets FAA acceptance criteria, but if you own an older unit, check before you book.
Step 2: Notify your airline 48 to 72 hours before departure. Most airlines have a phone line or online form for medical equipment. Confirm three things: their notice requirements, whether they need a physician's statement, and their battery rules. If your trip has connections on a partner airline, check that carrier too.
Step 3: Do the battery math. This is the number one thing that trips travelers up, so here it is in a box.
Step 4: Pack batteries the right way. Spare batteries must travel in your carry-on, never in checked luggage, with terminals covered or taped to prevent short circuits. One caution for 2026: a few airlines have tightened rules on the largest "double" batteries because of their watt-hour ratings. If you use an extended or double battery, confirm it with your airline when you give notice.
At the airport. Arrive early and give yourself an unhurried hour more than usual. TSA screens POCs routinely; keep your prescription and physician's statement handy, though you often will not be asked. Charge at every opportunity: at the gate, during layovers, anywhere there is an outlet. Board when pre-boarding is offered.
On the plane. Your POC rides under the seat in front of you or on your lap, clear of the aisle. Units meeting FAA acceptance criteria may run during taxi, takeoff, and landing. Keep spare batteries within reach so swapping is easy.
The car is how most oxygen users travel, and it is also the easiest.
Charge as you drive. A DC power supply plugs your POC into the car outlet, so you arrive with full batteries instead of empty ones. If you do not have the DC cable for your unit, get it before the trip. It is the single best travel accessory there is.
Heat is the enemy. Never leave your concentrator or batteries in a hot parked car. Heat degrades lithium batteries and can damage the device. The POC comes with you into the restaurant.
Plan your stops. On long hauls, note where you will stop and charge. Keep the cannula tubing routed so it will not tangle with the seatbelt, and keep a spare cannula in the glovebox.
Bring backup anyway. Even though you can charge while driving, carry at least one fully charged spare battery. Breakdowns and detours happen, and oxygen planning is about never getting caught short.
Cruises. Cruise lines welcome portable concentrators, but they want to know in advance. As soon as you book, contact the line's accessibility or special-needs desk, register your device, and ask about power at your cabin. Pack your full battery kit for shore excursions, and treat each port day like a short flight: charged batteries, spare cannula, and a plan.
Trains. Rail travel is friendly to oxygen users, with more room and, on many routes, outlets at your seat. Still, confirm the carrier's medical-device policy when booking and board with charged batteries rather than counting on the outlet working.
Buses and tours. Policies vary the most here. Call the operator before booking, ask about power availability, and default to carrying your full battery supply.
In the hotel. Ask for a room with an outlet near the bed, or pack a small extension cord, which solves the problem everywhere. Set up your charging station the moment you arrive so every outing starts at full charge.
Altitude. If your destination sits notably higher than home, you may need a different setting. This is a your-doctor question, and it is worth asking before you leave rather than figuring out when you are short of breath at 7,000 feet.
